Configuring an EX-i SFC3000 Flow Computer to Meet Specific Measurement Requirements
The SFC3000 flow computer, developed by Sussex-based Ex-i Flow Measurement Ltd., is a versatile solution for liquid hydrocarbon and gas measurement. Built for both standalone single-stream systems and complex multi-stream configurations, the SFC3000 provides the flexibility required for modern energy operations.

Purpose-Built for Energy Measurement
Designed to address the stringent requirements of the global hydrocarbon and gas measurement markets, the SFC3000 combines accuracy, reliability, and efficiency. Its advanced architecture not only ensures precise measurement but also contributes to the management and conservation of global energy resources—a critical consideration in today’s energy landscape.
Beyond a Standard Flow Computer
Unlike conventional flow computers, the SFC3000 functions on multiple levels:
- Standalone Flow Computer – Fully functional as a dedicated unit.
- Supervisory Controller – Capable of overseeing station operations.
- System Component – Seamlessly integrates into larger, multi-stream measurement networks.
Impact on Energy Management
- By integrating state-of-the-art components and software, the SFC3000 offers more than just measurement—it enables data-driven management and optimization of resources. This contributes directly to the efficient utilization of dwindling energy reserves, making it a valuable tool for both operators and energy managers.
Key Features of the SFC3000 Flow Computer
- Standard Features: standalone flow computing function, flow computing combined with supervisory function, up to 2 GB additional memory for Alarm, Audit and Data Logging (optional SD card required).
- Touchscreen VGA Display – Intuitive interface with easy-to-use controls. Showing system diagrams, trending and graphical displays, language options, interfaces to most types of metering equipment and all popular GCs, easy installation and interfacing.
- Powerful Processing Capabilities – Handles complex measurement tasks with efficiency.
- Unique Operating Software – Provides flexibility for a wide range of applications.
- Scalable Design – Supports expansion from single-stream to multi-stream systems.
• Measurement conforming to AGA, ISO, API standards of: dry and wet natural gas, hydrocarbon liquids, other gases (e.g., nitrogen), other liquids (e.g., water).
• NMi Certificates to: WELMEC 7.2 and 8.8, OIML R117, MID 2014/32/EU.

• Maintenance Functions: stream summation, PID/sampler functions, flow computer specification.
Measurement Requirements of installation
The SFC3000 flow computer should be considered the “brains” of a flow measurement system and requires the addition of peripheral components to take measurements. These options are determined by the specific application and can be specified by following these steps.
- Are the measurements for flow or fiscal purposes? For fiscal measurment computers, each stream will require a separate I/O board.
- Is the application for measuring oil or gas? If it is oil, is a prover to be used, and if so, an additional two I/O boards will be required, either Digital (#3000-314) or Analogue (#3000-316). This will reduce the number of slots available for other streams and communication boards.
- How many streams are required to be measured? 1–5 streams can be measured by each flow computer. For critical systems, consider multiple single-stream units instead of one multi-stream, to allow for failures and maintenance.
- What input types are in the system to be measured? 4–20 mA, HART, PRT, etc., and how many of each? Knowing what input types are required will allow correct selection of I/O boards (see chart and table below).
- What meter type and interface is required? Different meters have different interfaces, which will add to the I/O, serial or Ethernet requirements.
- How many and which output types are required? Digital and/or 4–20 mA. Outputs can be used for reporting and control.
Communication Options
- Are serial communication ports required—and if so, how many? Each I/O board has a non-isolated serial port with RS232/485. Additional isolated serial ports (3 per) and 2 Ethernet ports are available on the Dual Ethernet Boards. The I/O board serial port is non-isolated because it is typically used for connection to a meter, which is isolated via a safety barrier. The isolated serial ports are not for hazardous area use directly.
Other Considerations
- Is there a redundancy requirement? Consider a Duty and Standby system.
- Will the flow computer be used in a humid, damp, or salty environment? If so, a conformal coating should be utilized to help protect the electronics.
Selecting an I/O Board
The following flow diagram is a guide to the decision-making process for specifying which I/O board is required per stream. It is worth noting that inputs and outputs for a particular stream are not limited to one board—for example, if more than four 4–20 mA outputs are required for a single stream, additional I/O can be added to provide the extra outputs.

Option boards available
- Digital I/O Board (#3000-314)
- Analogue I/O Board (#3000-316)
- Switch I/O Board (#3000-317)
- Digital I/O 2 Board (#3000-319)
- Dual Ethernet (Network) Board (#3000-318)
Other Options
- SD card fitted
- Conformal coating
Accesories
Ex-i Flow can manufacture cable harnesses in-house so customers’ requirements for cable type, length, and breakout modules or connectors can be accommodated. The default for I/O boards is a 36-way spring clamp connector. Other options include free-ended cables and breakout modules with dedicated cables.
There are two types of communication breakout modules available: one connects RJ45 to RJ45 in various combinations depending on function, the other converts RJ45 to screw terminals.
A 19” rack, with or without blanking panels, is also available and can hold up to two SFC3000 Flow Computers. If only one is being installed, two quarter panels can be supplied to center the unit in the rack.
